The 38-year-old mother, her four-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter were rushed to medical facilities on Saturday.
However, the family’s daughter died in the emergency room of the Alexandra Community Health Center on Saturday evening.
Gauteng health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba says the mother and son are in stable condition and under medical care.
“The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) confirms that a 38-year-old mother and her 4-year-old son from Alexandra in Johannesburg are currently being treated at Edenvale Hospital following a suspected foodborne illness.”
Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi has called for calm in the community as investigations continue.
“An investigation is currently underway following the incident. A team of police investigators, in collaboration with health experts and other role players, will investigate allegations made about the food the victims consumed before becoming ill.”
The 10-year-old’s death comes after six children in Naledi, Soweto died last month from suspected food poisoning.
