If you don’t remember Microsoft peopleit was a Windows 10 app, a mix of a social network and a contact list that wasn’t very popular and was eventually abandoned. It looks like Microsoft is giving it another try, as an executable of the new People app for Windows 11 has been leaked on X by WalkingCat.
Is it Microsoft 365 Companion or Microsoft People?
There is some confusion with this app because when you run the executable, you are presented with the Microsoft 365 Companion icon, just like in the caption above.
However, after the app starts, it will appear as People (preview). We’re quite used to such riddles from Microsoft and since this was actually leaked, the Redmond giant probably hasn’t settled on a final name yet.
Why is Microsoft People being revived?
Even though the People app for Windows 11 was removed, you could still access it through Mail and Calendar. But Outlook New has replaced Mail and Calendar and it does not have a contact management tool, one of the aspects that users complain about and try to remove Outlook New.
So Microsoft People will likely meet that requirement. When we tried to sign in, we found that you can only do this if you are a Microsoft 365 customer with a work or school account.
Additionally, the app is only 2MB in size and appears to be designed around the Outlook for Web user interface. If Microsoft decides to put the pedal to the metal on this app, you’ll be able to sync and create meetings right from Microsoft People. We imagine you’ll also be able to call contacts via Microsoft Teams or see the files you’ve shared with a contact, just like you could in the Windows 10 app.
Will the new Microsoft People or Microsoft 365 Companion app turn away users who don’t want Outlook New? Tell us what you think in the comments below. We found this from Windows Latest.
