Swiggy has been fined Rs 35,000 for increasing the delivery distance to overcharge the customer. A district consumer dispute committee in Hyderabad has forwarded the food delivery app to a Hyderabad man who has filed a complaint against the company.
What the consumer claimed
Emmadi Suresh Babu, a resident of Hyderabad, filed a complaint against Swiggy with the consumer court. The user claimed that despite having a Swiggy One member who entitles him to free delivery, Swiggy charged him delivery fees. He said that on November 1, 2023, he ordered food from Swiggy at a restaurant 6 miles away from his home. But the food delivery platform increased the distance to 14 km and charged him ₹103 as delivery distance.
What the consumer court has determined
The consumer court ordered Swiggy to refund Babu’s Rs 103 delivery charges. Moreover, it has imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the online food delivery platform for mental anguish and inconvenience to the customer. The court also directed Swiggy to cover Babu’s legal costs with an additional Rs 5,000 and pay Rs 25,000 in compensation to the Consumer Welfare Fund of the Ranga Reddy District Commission.
Swiggy has 45 days to comply with the order.
